Aeriflux™ measures the acid that appears in the exhaled breath when acid reflux into the airway causes your patient to cough. Several mechanisms by which acid reflux causes cough are described in the literature. These include acid stimulation of vagally innervated esophageal receptors, laryngeal or pharyngeal contact with refluxate, and micro aspiration of refluxed gastric acid. It is well-recognized that aspiration of even small amounts of stomach acid have profound effects on the respiratory system, including persistent cough. More and more physicians and researchers are shifting their focus toward airway acid and away from esophageal acid as the primary cause of respiratory symptoms in these patients. When cough is associated with breath acidification, acid reflux cough is much more likely diagnosed, and a positive response to proton pump inhibition can more reasonably be expected.
